Progress report: Swisscom (Un)limited on the EDGE

Got a friendly mail from nova media that most probably my Option Globetrotter COMBO EDGE card is broken (hardware issue). I would believe that instantly if the card would not work on Windows XP SP2 too - but it is working flawlessly with Swisscom Unlimited Data Manager V1.6 (that is using the original Option Drivers).

My wild guess #1: The Card Firmware has a bug that - depending how the card is initialised - can be avoided - and that's what Option is doing with their Windows drivers and nova media doesn't. (No offends - I just want to solve the issue and share my thoughts)

Comparing the AT commands send to the card in Windows vs. Mac shows differences (I know that there is more than just the AT commands to make this card working - but that's the only thing I found to log - any hint about how to log low level communication to a PC Card on Windows and Mac are welcome).

Mac OS X with driver from nova media:

AT&F
ATV1E1X1
AT+CGDCONT=9,"IP","gprs.swisscom.ch",""
AT+CGQMIN=9
AT+CGQREQ=9
ATD*99***9#

Windows XP with Modem Driver from Option:

AT
AT&F&D2&C1E0V1S0=0
AT+IFC=2,2
ATS0=0
AT
AT&F&D2&C1E0V1S0=0
AT+IFC=2,2
ATD*##***##

That looks very different - need to find a reference about all these AT commands to understand what the real difference is.

To be continued...

Voodoo at Parallax Living

A good friend just created a blog - Toni (aka voodoo).

(Human) Face Recognition - Hi David

Riya - the automatic face recognition service gave a launch party. While browsing some pix in Flickr I recognised a familiar face - Mr dG (on the left side). He was CTO at Open Text by the time I was working there.

Swisscom (Un)limited on Mac - Install Notes 1

Bought the Swisscom Unlimited PC Card (Option Globetrotter COMBO EDGE) package. Additionally the latest version of Mobile High Speed for Mac OS from nova media. Installation is nice and easy - see screenshot of config windows. What came next wasn't amusing.

There are two issues I can't yet figure out why they are happening:

  1. I can only open the connection with "Internet Connect" when I previously have initialised the card by opening the Mobile High Speed application (without clicking on Activation) and then closing. If I don't do that - the card does not respond to the AT+CGDCONT command and run into a time-out later in the connect script. Bad - but I have a workaround.
  2. After the connection is open - the card stop responding after some traffic (unknown of the size) is sent in and out. The red light on the card suddenly stop blinking. That sometimes cause the PowerBook to hang (hard reboot needed to recover). If I don't produce any traffic - the line remains open (card blinking) without a problem. Very strange. I opened a support ticket at nova media - see if they know how to solve that.

Did an update to the latest firmware to check if that helps - nope. Note that the update of firmware is only possible on Windows (using the Swisscom tools) and you need to remove the SIM card before update! (firmware update will fail with SIM card inserted - and they don't tell you that - until you call support)

Additional small issues:

  1. The nova media software tells me that the card can do EDGE with max 160kbps - the Swisscom package tells me up to 236.8 Kbit/s - what's true?
  2. When connecting and transmitting data - the card produces static noise in the speakers (workaround - mute speakers)

The ink is dry - 10. Nov

On this very day - 3 decent men signed a charter that incorporates the project that will change the way people (in Switzerland) will be able to explore their neighbourhood online. I'm delighted to be part of it.. a big thanks to all that made this step possible today.

Update on Swisscom Mobile Unlimited for Mac

This is an update on a previous article.

According to the updated list of supported PC Cards from nova media, the two cards offered in the Swisscom Mobile Unlimited packages should work on Mac OS X. They too managed to make a SP politician happy - see comment on VersionTracker. It looks like save buying the Unlimited package and add a copy of nova media "Mobile High Speed 3G" into the mix.

Maybe the UMTS+GPRS4MacOS modem script is enough to get it running (works fine using GPRS from my mobile phone as network access).

Swisscom is running Cisco software in the back to keep track of the connection and do the proper billing. The Unlimited software installed on the client most probably contains a component that does a custom authentication with this Cisco system (thx Jürg for the hint).
