EDGE is not an Option on PowerBook (redirect to UMTS)

Although nova media claims the EDGE edition of the Swisscom Unlimited card would work with an Apple PowerBook - I was not able to get in working and they could not help me. They told me it must be an issue with my PowerBook, other customers are happy using this card. Bad luck then - I run the 15' from the last PowerBook edition that will ever exist (1.67Ghz).

I switched card - and use the UMTS edition that works. There is still one issue that the nova media card driver doesn't completely initialize the card after plug-in - you always need to use their configuration tool that does the proper init - then the card is ready to connect.

Bad news for all PC Card with PowerBook users - the new Intel-based MacBook Pro don't have PC Card slots anymore (Apple added the next-gen. ExpressCard/34 slot!). I guess it's time to buy a mobile phone that has EDGE/UMTS and convince your mobile network provider to give you the same (flat) data prices for a voice enabled account (it looks like it's locked to the SIM card you get with the Unlimited Card at Swisscom) and use it as bluetooth modem.

Good and bad news.

A Swisscom SIM with unlimited activated works in a UMTS/EDGE/GPRS etc. handy... So go an buy one (to my knowledge, only Nokia has all combined).

Backlash: There will be no voice services. That's why I am waiting ;-)

yeah, tried that already

- would be nice from Swisscom to allow the transfer of the flat-fee data account to the voice account (both on the same sim-card) so you don't need 2 phones ;)

I'm not sure if that's possible.

I have exactly the same problem. I have two data cards~:

1) a 3G (UMTS)/GPRS/GSM Quad card from Option. This was supplied courtesy of Vodafone UK

2) EDGE/GPRS/GSM COMBO card from Option

I am running Nova's Mobile High Speed Connect.

I have both a Vodafone UK and a SwissComm SIM.

The Quad card works fine via GPRS or UMTS using either my Vodafone or my SwissComm SIM.

The COMBO card works fine - for about 10 minutes, and then ALWAYS hangs my Powerbook (G4, 1.25Ghz) requiring a hard re-boot. This is infuriating! It doesn't seem to be dependent on the amount of data being transferred either - it seems more of a connection time issue. The hang normally happens between 8-12 minutes into the connection, but never later than 15, which is the maximum I've ever managed to remain connected.

Has anyone managed to fix this? I'm up in the Alps, so there's no UMTS coverage here. I had hoped to use the EDGE card to get better connection speeds than that offerd by the Quad card under GPRS, but with the hanging issue the card (and the expensive HSC s/w from Nova!) is totally useless! If they can't fix it on Monday somehow, I'll be asking them for a refund.
